KUCHING: Braving muddy tracks and unpredictable rain, the Philippines contingent has embraced the challenge at the Siol International Mountain Bike Challenge (SIMBC), adjusting strategies while aiming for strong finishes.
Team manager, Hernan Jan Buenacosa, said the squad of 13 riders arrived in Kuching midweek, and is making its debut at the prestigious event.
Hailing from Tacurong City in Mindanao, Buenacosa leads a line-up that features competitors across several divisions, including Men’s Elite, Masters A and B, and Women’s XCO.
“The weather has been tricky with the rain, and the track is muddy with clay, but the riders are adjusting well,” said Buenacosa.
He explained that the team has had to adapt quickly to the tropical conditions, fine-tuning tyre pressure and bike setups to cope with the slippery course.
“We need to double our time in pedalling, and sometimes even change tyres to suit the terrain,” he told Sarawak Tribune at the track today.
Despite the challenges, Buenacosa praised the event’s organisation and Sarawak’s hospitality.
“From the Siol organisers to the SIMBC team, everything has been very good. The culture and the warm welcome we received here are perfect. We will definitely be coming back,” he said.
The Philippine riders range in age from 17 to 46, underlining a mix of youth and experience eager to prove themselves on the international stage.
As they continue their campaign, the team remains focused on delivering strong performances while flying the Philippine flag proudly.
“We are supporting our fellow Filipino riders all the way, and hopefully we can finish on the podium,” Buenacosa added.
Meanwhile, Gabriel Amigo, a 34-year-old professional mountain bike racer, said he has been competing for more than a decade, specialising in endurance and downhill racing.
“I really love racing, and this track was nice. Today, I took it a bit easy and just enjoyed myself,” said Amigo, who placed fifth in the Elite category.
“It’s been a great journey, travelling everywhere to compete, and I’m very thankful to my sponsors for giving me the opportunity to race around the world.
“This is my first time here in Kuching, and I have to say, it’s been wonderful. The people are so welcoming, the community is amazing, and I hope to come back again soon.”
Looking ahead, he believes tomorrow’s event will be his real test.
“Tomorrow will be my chance to really push – with more power, better accuracy, and sharper target lines. Hopefully, it will be my time to shine and to make it onto the podium,” he said.
Amigo also praised Sarawak’s food and hospitality stating that the food here has been fantastic – clean, healthy, and full of flavour.
“The taste and aroma are perfect, and I have really enjoyed it. I am looking forward to the final run in the Downhill Elite and Masters category tomorrow, and I’m ready to give it my all,” he said.
