KUCHING: As Malaysia’s gig economy continues to grow, an estimated 230,000 people, or about 10 per cent of Sarawak’s population, are expected to be involved in the sector.

Kuching South City Council (MBKS) Mayor Datuk Wee Hong Seng said gig workers play an essential role in the modern supply chain, yet many still lack the financial protection that traditional employees receive.

“That is why the ‘Gogiggers Financial Literacy Programme 2025 – Jelajah Borneo’ is timely, as it focuses on equipping gig workers particularly foodpanda riders with practical financial knowledge, tools and support.

“Through literacy workshops, structured savings tracking and access to Employee Provident Fund (EPF) and Bank Simpanan Nasional services, this programme builds essential financial resilience,” he said.

He said this in his speech, representing Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian during the launching ceremony of the literacy programme at a hotel here today (July 29).

He added the programme benefitted over 100 food delivery riders in West Malaysia last year. The Borneo edition now brings that initiative to Sarawak, with another 100 riders selected to take part.

“The goal is to instill better financial habits, encourage emergency savings, and promote responsible money management among workers who often have irregular incomes,” he said.

Wee asserted that financial literacy is not a luxury but a necessity, and that the programme ensures gig workers in Sarawak are not left behind.

“I commend Agensi Kaunseling dan Pengurusan Kredit (AKPK) for making financial education more accessible, and for designing a programme that is practical, engaging, and outcome-driven.

“To all participating riders, take this opportunity seriously. Learn, apply, and grow from this experience. And while you serve the public, please prioritise your safety and well-being,” he said.
