BETONG: The public has been reminded to take fire prevention measures seriously as the festive season approaches.
In making the call Sarawak Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) Director, Jamri Masran, stressed the importance of exercising caution, particularly when using electrical appliances and cooking equipment.
“I would like to remind everyone to remain vigilant, especially when handling electrical devices and cooking appliances.
“Fire prevention, monitoring, and protection measures must be taken seriously.
“For example, electrical appliances and devices must be used correctly and safely under supervision.
“Additionally, old electrical wiring should be inspected, as it may pose risks of short circuits and overheating – common causes of fires,” he said during the launch of the 2025 Hari Raya Aidilfitri Festive Season Fire Safety Campaign, by Betong Member of Parliament, Datuk Dr Richard Rapu, here recently.
He explained that the department initiated this campaign to raise public awareness about fire safety, particularly during festive periods.
“We are concerned about the ‘3L’ syndrome – ‘Lupa, Lalai, Leka’ (Forgetful, Careless, Negligent) – a common habit among the community that could lead to accidents or fires.
“In addition to enhancing firefighting operational readiness, Bomba also focuses on building safety and increasing community awareness of fire prevention.
“Typically, during the festive season, commercial premises experience a surge in public activity.
“As a proactive measure, we are intensifying inspections to eliminate fire hazards in business premises and to ensure fire safety systems and equipment are in proper working condition,” he added.
The campaign launch featured a range of comprehensive activities, including a Junior Fire Club programme involving 30 children from four nurseries and kindergartens.
The programme covered six modules focusing on basic fire knowledge and skills.
Additionally, teachers, parents, and childcare centre operators participated in fire safety talks and demonstrations, including proper handling of fire extinguishers and kitchen fire suppression techniques.
Bomba Sarawak also distributed 30 fire extinguishers to six villages.
Six new Community Firefighting Teams (PBK) with a total of 60 members were established, increasing the number of teams across Sarawak to 1,101 with a total membership of 11,581.
Also, six new Celik SURI (Household Risk Management) teams were formed, raising the total to 122 teams comprising 1,262 members across Sarawak.
The event also included the presentation of the “Fire Hydrant Buddy” certificates to five individuals.
Also present at the ceremony were Betong Division Resident Richard Michael Abunawas and Sri Aman Zone Three Fire and Rescue Chief Muhammad Rais Adham Rosalan.
