MIRI: A fire broke out at a furniture business along Jalan Miri-Lutong in the early hours of Monday, damaging about 30 per cent of a ground floor unit before firefighters brought the situation under control.
The Sarawak Fire and Rescue Department said it received an emergency call at 12.10am reporting a building fire at Italy Furniture Trading. Fire engines were mobilised within minutes and arrived at the scene at about 12.21am, roughly 10km from the station.
By the time the firefighters arrived, the blaze involving a permanent structure measuring approximately 80 by 80 square feet on the first level of the building, was already well developed, with flames affecting about one third of the premises.
The Fire Operation centre said a rapid size-up using the RECEO concept confirmed there were no victims trapped inside the building. Firefighters wasted no time in preventing it from spreading to adjacent structures.
A single 400-foot hose line was deployed, supported by a divider and two nozzles, with water supplied from a nearby fire hydrant. The fire was brought under control by 12.35am and fully extinguished shortly after.
Firefighters remained at the scene to carry out overhaul work and ensure there was no risk of re-ignition before operations ended at about 1am.
Additional support was provided by the Lopeng Fire and Rescue Station. A total of several fire appliances and more than a dozen personnel were involved in the operation.
No injuries were reported.
Police officers from Miri Central Police Station, including personnel from the Criminal Investigation Department, were also present, along with representatives from the District Office and Sarawak Energy contractor teams.
The presence of multiple agencies suggests standard post-incident safety checks and preliminary assessments were carried out at the scene.
Senior fire officer Alif Nasif was also present to oversee the operation.
The cause of the fire and the estimated losses have yet to be determined and remain under investigation.
