MIRI: A 55-year-old longhouse was destroyed in a fire at Simpang Nu, Batu Niah, leaving 62 of its 76 doors gutted,on Friday (Jul 31).
The Sarawak Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) said the non-permanent Rumah Panjang Changgai, built in 1971, had been unoccupied since 2023. No injuries or fatalities were reported.
A spokesman said the department received an emergency call at 6.24 pm and dispatched firefighters from the Batu Niah station, assisted by personnel from Lopeng, to the scene.
Upon arrival, firefighters found the blaze had already engulfed the affected section of the longhouse.
The fire was brought under control at 8.15 pm and operations concluded at 12.39 am today (Aug 1).
A total of 19 firefighters, supported by two Fire Rescue Tenders (FRT) and an Emergency Medical Rescue Services (EMRS) vehicle, took part in the operation.
