KUCHING: Fire has destroyed 80.15 hectares of a pineapple plantation in Marudi, Baram.
Fire and Rescue Department Sarawak said the blaze at the 838.12-hectare pineapple plantation site is still spreading.
“A team from the Marudi station is currently on its fourth day of firefighting operations since 26 July,” it said in a statement.
The pineapple plantation fire is among four open burning incidents reported across various parts of Sarawak as of Tuesday, with operations being carried out by respective fire stations to control and extinguish the blaze.
It added that the forest fire near Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM) Mukah has destroyed two hectares of land, with efforts to contain the flames being actively carried out by firefighters from the Mukah station since 25 July.
“At the same time, a fire at the former landfill site in Kampung Plaie, Kota Samarahan, continues to spread and has now affected four hectares.
“The landfill fire, which spans a total area of 16.18 hectares, has been burning since 27 July and efforts to douse the fire are ongoing by firefighters from the Kota Samarahan station,” it said.
It also said a landfill site in Kampung Jerijih, Tanjung Manis, caught fire Monday, with the latest affected area covering two hectares out of a total of 3.81 hectares site.
