MIRI: A Toyota Camry was reduced to a shell after it caught fire on the Pan Borneo Highway near Kampung Subak, Bekenu, on Sunday afternoon.

Two men walked away uninjured in what firemen described as a total loss.

The alarm was raised at 3.14 pm when the driver, a male, aged 56 , spotted smoke rising from the engine.

He pulled over, and within moments the vehicle ignited. Both driver and the passenger escaped before flames tore through the car.

Five Batu Niah firefighters made the 53-km run and reached the scene at 3.51 pm to find the car fully ablaze.

Operations commander Raymond Sigan said the team deployed a hose line and used water from the engine tank. The blaze was brought under control within minutes and extinguished soon after.

The fire did not spread and no other vehicles were involved.

Police officers from Bekenu provided support at the scene.
