SIBU: A fire completely destroyed one block of a workers’ quarters located near Hann’s Residence on Jalan Wong King Huo and rendered its 40 doors uninhabitable.

Zone 4 Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) chief Andy Alie stated that an emergency call was received at 9.10am, prompting a rapid response from the Sibu Central Fire and Rescue Station, supported by the Sungai Merah station.

Upon arrival, the firefighting teams conducted a size-up of the situation and initiated an offensive and defensive strategy. The team from Sibu Sentral deployed a 500-foot hose with two nozzles, drawing water from a nearby hydrant to control and extinguish the flames.

Meanwhile, the backup team from Sungai Merah used a 200-foot hose with two nozzles to tackle the fire from the rear of the structure. 

“The fire was declared under control at 9.33 am and fully extinguished by 10 am with Block 1 of the workers’ quarters, a 40-door structure measuring 80 by 15 feet, completely destroyed.

“However, Block 2 and Block 3, both housing six units each, and Block 4, which serves as a surau, were successfully saved. Fortunately, no casualties were reported, and all occupants, consisting of Indonesian workers, were safely evacuated,” Andy said.

The combined efforts of the firefighting teams successfully prevented the fire from spreading to adjacent blocks. Overhaul operations were conducted to ensure no smoldering embers remained.
