MIRI: Hospital Miri conducted a fire drill exercise at Block B on Thursday morning to test the readiness of its staff and emergency response units in handling potential fire incidents.

The hospital’s fire alarm was triggered at 9.01 am, simulating a fire outbreak on Level 7 of Block B. The Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) arrived at 9.30 am and immediately carried out evacuation procedures involving a level two building evacuation and the rescue of two simulated “victims”.

By 10 am, both Bomba and the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) confirmed that the situation was under control, and the hospital was given clearance to stand down.

Hospital Miri said, in a statement, that the annual exercise aimed to prevent loss of life, minimise property damage, and equip hospital staff with the knowledge and skills to handle real emergencies, particularly in the hospital’s new Block B building.

“The drill also provided an opportunity for post-mortem assessment to identify areas for improvement and to ensure hospital staff remain well-prepared and coordinated with external agencies during actual emergencies,” it said.

The hospital’s management expressed appreciation to the Lopeng Fire and Rescue Station, Miri District Police Headquarters and concession companies that participated in the operation.

Hospital Miri also apologised to patients and visitors who experienced temporary delays in services during the training session.

The management reaffirmed its commitment to conducting such exercises regularly as part of its safety policy to enhance the overall preparedness of staff and strengthen inter-agency coordination during real-life emergency situations.
