SIBU: A late-night fire broke out at a furniture warehouse along Jalan Pelawan on Wednesday, damaging about 23 per cent of the building.

Zone 4 Fire and Rescue Department chief Andy Alie said they received a call at 10.25 pm and dispatched firefighters from the Sungai Merah and Sibu Sentral stations to the scene, located roughly 7km away.

“Upon arrival, we found that the fire had affected the outer section of a two-storey warehouse, specifically under a roof extension connected to the main building,” he said in a statement today.

Firefighters managed to bring the blaze under control by 10.39 pm.

However, the overhaul operation continued until 3.09 am.

“During the overhaul, the fire engine’s pump malfunctioned, and our team had to switch to a portable pump to complete the task,” he added.

Fire barriers were also installed, and the premises was handed over to the owner once it was confirmed safe and free from any fire risks.

No casualties were reported in the incident and the cause of the fire as well as the estimated losses are still under investigation.
