MARUDI: A fire tore through a telecommunications substation engine room in Bukit TV, here, on Wednesday (Jan 28), destroying the structure completely and knocking out two engine units.

Firefighters from the Marudi Fire and Rescue Station were mobilised at 5.58 pm following an emergency call reporting flames at the facility along Jalan Gudang. The site is located about 28km from the station.

The first appliance arrived at 6.28 pm to find the engine room fully ablaze. Initial attempts to contain the fire had been made by on-site workers using five dry powder extinguishers and two carbon dioxide units, but the blaze had already taken hold and could not be controlled.

The fire involved two engine units and razed the engine room structure, measuring approximately 10 feet by 15 feet, to the ground. The building was assessed to be 100 per cent destroyed.

Fire crews deployed foam and water sourced from a nearby storage tank. The operation was brought under control at 7.02 pm, with full extinguishment confirmed at 8.20 pm.

No injuries were reported.

The operation was led by PBKI Erec Unyi, with a team of firefighters operating a Triton VGT appliance. The crew returned to the station at 9.06pm after ensuring the area was safe.

The cause of the fire and the extent of service disruption, if any, were not immediately known.
