MIRI: Eight families who lost their homes in a fire at Rumah Sain Ugang, Batu 18 Bukit Song, Beluru, received cash aid from Deputy Minister of Youth, Sports and Entrepreneur Development, Datuk Dr Ripin Lamat today (Aug 22).

The fire had destroyed eight doors of the longhouse on Thursday evening.

Ripin, who is also the Lambir assemblyman, said the assistance was to ease their burden while their further needs were being assessed.

Food baskets, bottled water and hygiene kits were also distributed by the Miri Welfare Department (JKM) and the Marudi Civil Defence Force (APM).

For temporary shelter, Ripin arranged for two canopies to be set up at the nearby community hall and instructed agencies to clear the site immediately.

Sarawak Energy Berhad (SEB) and the Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) were directed to ensure electricity supply was safe, with temporary connections extended from nearby houses.

The Rural Water Supply Department (JBALB) was also asked to install temporary toilets using the existing pipelines at the site.

Ripin later joined a briefing on the incident delivered by Miri Sentral Senior Fire Superintendent Bonny Martin Saging Mato at the community hall.
