MIRI: Firefighters in Miri contained a scrub fire near Jalan Airport within two hours of receiving an emergency call, preventing it from spreading further amid hot and dry conditions.

The blaze, which affected about 0.2 hectares of land — roughly the size of a small football pitch — was reported at 11.50am on Tuesday by a member of the public.

A team from the Miri Sentral Fire and Rescue Station was dispatched within minutes. They arrived at the scene shortly after midday. The site was located about 12 kilometres from the station.

In a statement, the Fire and Rescue Department said crews confirmed an active bush fire upon arrival and immediately began containment operations. Firefighters used a hose line from a Fire Rescue Tender (FRT), supported by manual fire beaters to control the flames along the ground.

The fire was brought under control at 1.15pm and was fully extinguished at 1.31pm.

Six personnel were involved in the operation. An Emergency Medical Rescue Services (EMRS) unit was also deployed as a precaution.

No injuries were reported, and there was no damage to nearby structures.

The incident occurred within the Sibuti parliamentary constituency and the Lambir state seat. The cause of the fire has yet to be established.

Authorities have reminded the public to avoid open burning and to report any signs of fire promptly, especially during periods of prolonged heat and dry weather, which can increase the risk of rapid fire spread.
