KUCHING: Firefighters are continuing efforts to extinguish a factory fire at Batu 9, Jalan Indah Ria, after the blaze reignited early Thursday morning (Oct 30).

The Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) said the fire, which initially broke out at 11.10 pm on Wednesday, was believed to have started from a pile of used tyres before spreading to two nearby factories.

“At about 5.45 am, the fire reignited in areas that had previously been extinguished. Firefighting operations are still ongoing to prevent further spread,” said Bomba in a statement.

The department said one used tyre factory was completely destroyed while another plastic recycling factory suffered 60 per cent damage.

“The fire involved a 60×60 sq ft pile of tyres that burned 100 per cent before spreading to the adjacent factory buildings, each measuring approximately 100×80 sq ft,” it added.

No casualties were reported in the incident. Firefighters from Kota Samarahan station led the operation, assisted by teams from Kota Sentosa, Siburan and Tabuan Jaya.

Bomba said the fire was initially brought under control at around 5.15 am, but operations continued into the following day to carry out direct attack, fire break and cooling work.

By Thursday night, about 60 per cent of the fire had been put out, with 40 per cent still burning at the back section of the factory area.
