KUCHING: Firm action under the law should be taken against any party spreading content that insults religion and race on social media.

National Unity Minister Datuk Aaron Ago Dagang said such actions clearly go against the principles of the Rukun Negara, which forms the foundation of the nation.

“In this regard, I urge the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) to act under Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 (Act 588) to ensure that any dissemination of content mocking or insulting religion in the mass media is dealt with appropriately,” he said in a statement.

He was responding to a recent viral video showing a radio personality from a local radio station mocking the Hindu religion.

The video depicted an individual imitating the kavadi dance while chanting ‘Vel Vel’ in a disrespectful manner, thus tarnishing the sanctity of the Hindu community’s beliefs in Malaysia.

Aaron further added that everyone must always uphold and respect the religious and cultural sensitivities present in Malaysia.

“As a multiracial country, we must foster the spirit of mutual respect for one another, regardless of religious or racial background.

“Any act that offends another religion should not be accepted in our multiracial society.

“Finally, I remind all parties not to incite tension or hatred between religious followers.

“Every action that threatens national unity and harmony must be taken seriously,” he stated.
