SIBU: The Public Works Department Sarawak (JKR) has launched the first artificial intelligence (AI) CCTV system at the P-turn of the Pan Borneo Highway in Selangau here as part of ongoing efforts to enhance road safety.
The launch ceremony, held on Wednesday (Feb 25), was officiated by director Datuk Cassidy Morris, who described the installation as a proactive step towards strengthening road safety measures and improving public environmental monitoring.
In JKR’s Facebook posting, Cassidy said the installation of the first AI-powered CCTV along the Pan Borneo Highway in Sarawak reflects the state’s commitment to leveraging smart technology in line with its smart city development aspirations.
He also called on all parties to make optimal use of the technology, while reminding road users to remain vigilant, adhere to traffic regulations and prioritise safety for the well-being of all.
The AI CCTV system is expected to enable more effective traffic monitoring, support accident prevention efforts and improve traffic management around Selangau and the wider Sibu Division.
Sarawak JKR reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening road safety infrastructure through innovative approaches to ensure the safety and comfort of road users.
Separately, Cassidy conducted a site visit to inspect structural damage to a retaining wall at the Selangau Interchange to assess the current condition and obtain detailed information on the cause of the incident.
The visit aimed to ensure that repair works can be carried out promptly and effectively to safeguard road users.
Following the incident, JKR temporarily closed the affected route to facilitate repair and stabilisation works on the damaged structure.
The move was taken as a safety precaution to prevent any risk of accidents and to ensure smooth implementation of restoration works.
Members of the public and road users are advised to remain patient and exercise caution when travelling near the affected area, and to comply with all safety signs provided.
