SIBU: The ability of communities to respond swiftly in emergency situations needs to be strengthened through the mastery of first aid knowledge.
The Malaysian Red Crescent Society (MRCS) Sibu branch has been actively working to expand such training to the public.
Sibu Rural District Council (MDLBS) councillor, Kevin Lau Kor Jie, said that basic first aid knowledge is a critical skill that can make the difference between life and death before professional help arrives.
He also said that expanding such training is essential in building a more responsive, resilient, and prepared community.
Lau added that active participation from the public, including students, can help widen the dissemination of first aid knowledge while producing more individuals who act as agents of change within the community.
He said this while officiating at the 2026 MRCS Sibu Annual Flag Sale Ceremony at Star Mega Mall on Saturday, representing Deputy Minister for Public Health, Housing and Local Government Datuk Michael Tiang Ming Tee.
Meanwhile, he emphasised that the Flag Sale campaign is not merely a fundraising platform, but also an important medium to instil humanitarian values, volunteerism, and health awareness among the public.
Also present were PBSMM Sibu chairman Penghulu Chua Hiong Kee and honorary advisor Lau Ngie Hua.
