SIBU: Bishop Emeritus of the Diocese of Sibu, Dominic Su Haw Chiu, has passed away at the age of 87, a day after the Church celebrated the Solemnity of the Ascension of the Lord.
According to the Diocese of Sibu’s Facebook page, Bishop Emeritus Dominic Su breathed his last at 9:52 am today (May 15).
The diocese said parishioners and the public wishing to pay their last respects may do so at the Conference Room of Sacred Heart Cathedral from 2:00 pm onwards beginning today.
Born on May 26, 1939, Dominic Su was ordained a priest on December 4, 1969, before being appointed the first Bishop of Sibu on December 22, 1986.
He was consecrated bishop on January 6, 1987, by Pope John Paul II and officially installed on February 11, 1987.
He faithfully shepherded the Diocese of Sibu until his retirement in December 24, 2011, and was succeeded by Bishop Joseph Hii Teck Kwong.
“We thank God for his devoted and tireless service to the Roman Catholic Church, his gentle shepherding of God’s people, and his witness of humility and faith. His life and ministry remain a lasting blessing to the Church in Sibu and beyond. We invite all clergy, religious and faithful to pray for the repose of his soul,” the diocese said.
The Encoffining Service for Bishop Emeritus Dominic Su will be held at 1:00 pm on Saturday, May 16, followed by the Funeral Mass at 2:00 pm at Sacred Heart Cathedral here.
“Let us continue to keep Bishop Emeritus Dominic Su in our prayers and entrust him to the mercy and love of the Risen Lord,” the diocese added.
“Eternal rest grant unto him, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon him. May he rest in peace. Amen.”
