KUCHING: Iftar Perdana held at the Square Tower, Kuching Waterfront, here saw more that 1,000 people participating in the breaking of fast on Saturday.
Deputy Minister of Utility and Telecommunication, Datuk Dr. Abdul Rahman Junaidi, said the event, the first of its kind, was organised by the Sarawak Islamic Council (MIS) in collaboration with Kuching North City Commission (DBKU).
It was supported by Kelab Belia Proaktif, Borneo Glamping, Grit Event Management, and Masjid India.
“This event is the first of its kind organised by MIS, and God-willing, we will hold it again next year.
“What’s special is that it involves city residents, as well as people from various races, religions and nationalities, that shows our known unity in diversity,” he said, when met during the breaking of fast (after the Iftar Perdana event) at Masjid India here.
The Deputy Minister, who is also in-charge of State Islamic Affairs, said the event saw more than 1,000 people throng the venue from as early as 4pm.
It spanned the area from the Square Tower, right up to Masjid India.
Families brought their own food and facilities, such as mats and chairs, to the picnic setting, while waiting for Maghrib prayer and breaking their fast.

Later in the evening, ‘bubur lambuk’ prepared by the mosque committee and other food prepared by DBKU and MIS were distributed to the people.
The Department of Islamic Affairs Director, who is also MIS Secretary, Ustaz Mual Suaud, said some of the food donations came from MIS, DBKU and Masjid India.
When asked if the same event would be organised again next year, he said looking at the turnout, they will consider organising another one.
Meanwhile, 25-year-old Nur Farhana Fuad, who came with her family and friends, said she always looks forward to this kind of gathering, and breaking fast in the open space with many people as if they are all picnicking.
For 34-year-old Zulqarnain Mohd Suleiman, this was his first time joining a big crowd for the breaking of fast in a public place.
“I like this kind of atmosphere that I can bring my family here too. We brought our own food, and there’s also food given by MIS and DBKU,” he said.
Ercktomey Mosolon, 25, was also seen with his friends, preparing for the breaking of fast.
The young man from Kota Belud, Sabah, who is a student at the Health Ministry’s Training Institute (ILKKM), said yesterday was his first time fasting, because he wanted to know what it felt like, and breaking the fast with his Muslim course mates.
