SARIKEI: Sarawak will become the first state in Malaysia to provide free tertiary education for its people starting next year, a landmark initiative aimed at ensuring equal access to higher learning and producing a highly skilled workforce.

Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said the policy reflects the state government’s long-term vision and commitment to the future of its young generation.

“Beginning next year, Sarawak will implement free tertiary education to ensure that more of our children can pursue university studies without being burdened by financial constraints,” he said in his address during the state-level National Day 2025 celebration here today.

The event was graced by Head of State Tun Pehin Seri Dr Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar and Toh Puan Datuk Patinggi Fauziah Mohd Sanusi.

Also present were Deputy Premiers, Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas and Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan.

He stressed that the initiative is designed to create a generation of skilled talents who can meet the demands of emerging industries and accelerate Sarawak’s economic transformation.

“This historic move makes Sarawak the first region in Malaysia to offer free higher education, reflecting GPS’ concern for the younger generation and its far-sighted leadership,” Abang Johari said.

Apart from free tertiary education, he said the state government also provides various other forms of support such as Yayasan Sarawak loans, cash scholarships and the Sarawak Education Fund, which are open to all Sarawakians regardless of race or socio-economic background.

“These efforts reaffirm our commitment to place education as a top priority in Sarawak’s development. Not only does this strengthen our leadership in national education reform, but it also uplifts the economic status of our people, especially those in rural areas,” he added.

Abang Johari said nurturing homegrown talent is crucial for Sarawak’s growth in sectors such as technology, renewable energy, entrepreneurship and smart agriculture, positioning the younger generation to drive the state’s progress in the years ahead.

“I call on all Sarawakians, regardless of background, to remain united, innovative and competitive in facing future challenges. Let us together seize every opportunity, enhance our knowledge and skills, and play an active role in the development of Sarawak,” he added.
