SIBU: The first coordination meeting on the proposed construction of a new school, Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan (SMK) Abang Ali Sibu, was held in Kuching on Monday.

“In line with the advice of the Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg, the school will be built if the Ministry of Education (MoE) agrees to its construction, and the Sarawak Government will initially bear the cost,” said Education, Innovation and Talent Development Deputy Minister, Datuk Dr Annuar Rapaee, in a Facebook post.

He added that among those who attended the meeting were the Sibu Deputy Resident, Sibu District Engineer, Superintendent of Land and Survey Sibu, the State Education Department (JPNS), Sibu District Education Office (PPD), State Financial Secretary’s Office (SFs), Economic Planning Unit (EPU), Sarawak Implementation and Monitoring Unit (SIMU), and the Ministry of Education, Innovation and Talent Development (MEITD).

“Hopefully, the construction of this school will become a reality,” he said.

On April 4, during a Raya celebration held here, Abang Johari had expressed his support for the proposed construction of the school.

He stated that the Sarawak Government is prepared to cover the initial construction costs, on the condition that the federal government reimburses the expenditure.

The establishment of SMK Abang Ali is intended to provide continuity for pupils who have completed their primary education at SK Abang Ali.
