KUCHING: A first-time offender may face imprisonment and caning after he was allegedly found in possession of suspected methamphetamine worth RM660 last Monday (Dec 1).

The Narcotics Crime Investigation Division (NCID) picked up the 25-year-old local man in Kampung Goebilt at around 1.25 pm.

Kuching police chief ACP Alexson Naga Chabu said a search on the suspect led to the discovery of seven blue-tinted plastic packets containing suspected methamphetamine weighing 6g.

Initial urine screening showed that he tested negative for drugs, while background checks confirmed he had no prior criminal record.

The suspect has been remanded for three days until Dec 5 under Section 39A(1) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952.

Upon conviction, the offence carries a jail term of up to five years and up to nine strokes of the cane.

Alexson said the success of the operation was made possible through continuous intelligence efforts and strong public cooperation.

Members of the public with information on drug activities are urged to report them to Bukit Aman NCID hotline at 012-2087222 or Sarawak NCID hotline at 017-5929211.
