KUCHING: The Rewilding Association of Sarawak (RAS) will host its first-ever TreeTalk session, ‘Rewilding a City, One Tree at a Time’, on Friday, August 15, at Hotel Telang Usan, here.

Founded by Sarawakian conservation pioneer, Philip Yong, RAS is a civic platform dedicated to reimagining ecological restoration by encouraging rewilding efforts that start from urban centres and extend into rural ecosystems.

“Our association envisions a Sarawak where cities play an active role in restoring biodiversity, ecological balance and environmental stewardship,” said the association on Friday.

RAS said, on August 15, the event’s keynote speaker will be Dr Anthony Shadbolt, a globally recognised rewilding practitioner from Christchurch, New Zealand, renowned for transforming degraded city landscapes into biodiverse and resilient green corridors.

“His talk will highlight global best practices and offer applicable strategies tailored to Sarawak’s environment,” it said.

Meanwhile, Yong said that rewilding must begin where the people are – in the towns and cities.

“If we can restore balance in urban areas, we can reframe how communities across Sarawak live with and care for nature,” he added.

The TreeTalk series aims to build a movement of ecological renewal by empowering local communities with the knowledge and tools to implement rewilding projects.

This inaugural event provides a crucial starting point for a conversation that will inspire residents to take tangible steps towards a greener, more sustainable future for Sarawak.

Attendance is limited, and interested parties are encouraged to RSVP promptly to secure a spot at https://bit.ly/Rewilding_Talk_Kch_Aug_2025.
