LUNDU: The Sarawak Forestry Corporation (SFC) has carried out its first turtle hatchling release at Pugu Beach under Project 35, which focuses on rural transformation through biodiversity conservation and community involvement.

A total of 85 green turtle hatchlings from two nests were successfully released into the sea on Sunday (Sept 20), marking a key milestone for the conservation programme.

The effort is part of the Community-based Turtle Conservation Rangers programme, where trained volunteers from Lundu assist with nest monitoring, protection, and hatchling release.

SFC said the initiative demonstrated that biodiversity conservation could be achieved inclusively with grassroots support.

“This initiative not only contributes to biodiversity conservation but also has the potential to spur community-based ecotourism,” it said in a Facebook statement.

The corporation added that such efforts could provide direct economic benefits to local residents while supporting the Post Covid-19 Development Strategy (PCDS) 2030, which aims to strengthen sustainable rural socio-economic development.
