SARATOK: A fisherman tragically died after falling into a storage compartment aboard a fishing vessel during rough seas off Kabong.

Saratok police chief DSP Mathew Manggie said the incident happened on Sunday (Dec 21) while the fishing vessel, registered as SF25754, was navigating rough seas.

Preliminary investigations indicate that the 26-year-old victim, a crew member, was believed to have lost his footing and fallen into the fish storage compartment.

“The fall was witnessed by a colleague who immediately sought help from others on board to rescue the victim.

“Despite their efforts, the victim succumbed to severe head and facial injuries at the scene,” he said.

His body was later brought to Tanjung Manis Jetty and a police report was lodged to enable further action.

Mathew confirmed that police found no signs of foul play in the case.

The case has been classified as sudden death.
