Fisherman suffers serious arm injury while operating winch machine

TANJUNG MANIS: A local fisherman sustained a serious injury to his right hand while operating a winch equipment aboard a Class C fishing vessel off the coast here on Wednesday (May 7).

The Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA), through the Maritime Rescue Sub Centre (MRSC) Kuching, coordinated a medical evacuation (MEDEVAC) following the incident.

According to Tanjung Manis Maritime Zone director Maritime Commander Mahkos Juing, the victim, identified as Mohd Rafi Abdullah, 26, from Bintangor, was reported to have been caught in the winch wire cable while lifting a trawl board at about 8.30pm.

“The boat skipper immediately contacted the Tanjung Manis Maritime Zone for assistance,” he said in a statement yesterday (May 8).

The victim being transported to the health clinic.

Following a distress call received at 9.45 pm, patrol vessel PETIR 82 was deployed to the scene to transfer the victim from the fishing boat to the Tanjung Manis Passenger Terminal Jetty.

The victim arrived at the jetty at 1.05 am and was then rushed to Tanjung Manis Health Clinic in a Civil Defence Force (APM) ambulance.

As of press time, he is reported to be in stable condition.
