MIRI: Fishermen and seafarers operating in Miri and Sibuti waters are better positioned to meet stricter maritime safety and regulatory requirements after 25 of them completed the Mate Domestic Open competency course.

The 10-day programme equipped participants with practical knowledge of navigation rules, safety procedures and designated fishing zones, including areas where fishing is restricted or prohibited.

Organisers said this is critical in reducing accidents at sea and avoiding unintentional breaches of maritime regulations.

The course, organised by Pelita Maslaut Sdn Bhd, is part of a broader push to raise professional standards among local maritime workers, particularly small scale fishermen who operate in increasingly regulated and congested waters.

Certificates were presented at a ceremony here yesterday by Pelita Maslaut managing director Masni Amit.

According to the organiser, the training goes beyond certification requirements by addressing real operational challenges faced by fishermen and seafarers, especially in understanding permitted fishing areas in Miri and Sibuti waters.

Pelita Maslaut said it plans to conduct another intake early next year to extend the training to more maritime workers in the region.
