KUCHING: Head of State Tun Pehin Sri Dr Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar has urged Sarawakians to heighten their preparedness as the monsoon season brings heavy rains and heightened risks of flooding, particularly in low-lying areas and near rivers.
He advised residents in high-risk areas to stay updated with weather warnings issued by the Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) and to comply with directives from local authorities.
These precautions are crucial to safeguard the safety of families, individuals, and property.
The Sarawak Governor expressed particular concern for fishermen as they have to face strong winds and rough seas, which elevate risks during this season.
“Before going out to sea, make sure all safety equipment such as life jackets, buoys, and communication devices are in good condition and functional.
“Life safety must take precedence even though the sea is a primary source of income,” he said in his official Facebook page.
Wan Junaidi also recommended that fishermen delay activities when weather conditions are unfavourable and pay close attention to weather updates to prevent accidents.
In addition, he also advised households to prepare emergency plans, including storing essential supplies like food, medicine, and important documents.
“Every instruction and warning from authorities must be followed for the well-being of all,” he said.
Wan Junaidi commended the Sarawak Disaster Management Committee (SDMC) and related agencies for their proactive measures in preparing for the monsoon season.
He hoped that manpower and logistical assets would be placed in strategic areas to ensure timely assistance for those in need.
He also called for well-equipped and health-compliant temporary relief centres (PPS) to address the needs of displaced individuals, including disease prevention measures.
Apart from that, Wan Junaidi also called on the people to pray for Sarawak to be protected from any major disasters.
“May we all be given the strength and perseverance to face this challenge together. With close cooperation between all parties, I am confident that we can safely weather this monsoon season,” he said.
