KUCHING: A fishing competition in Muara Tebas could help attract more visitors and create economic opportunities for the local community while supporting efforts to conserve fishery resources.
Energy and Environmental Sustainability Deputy Minister Datuk Dr Hazland Abang Hipni said the activity could contribute to local economic activity and provide opportunities that could support residents’ incomes.
“The fishing competition could potentially draw more visitors to Muara Tebas while contributing to local economic activity and providing opportunities that could support residents’ incomes,” he said.
Dr Hazland, who is also Demak Laut assemblyman, was speaking after officiating at a barramundi fry release held alongside the inaugural Kampung Muara Tebas Rukun Tetangga (KRT) fishing competition at Muara Tebas Jetty on Sept 19.
For fishing communities, the condition and availability of aquatic resources can have implications for both recreational activities and livelihoods.
The initiatives involving the release of barramundi fry was intended to contribute to efforts to conserve and enhance fishery resources.
The activity also aimed to increase awareness among members of the public about the importance of maintaining aquatic ecosystems.
The programme also highlighted cooperation between the Sarawak Marine Fisheries Department (JPLS), local fishing communities and residents of Kampung Muara Tebas.
According to the organisers, the collaboration reflected a shared interest in fishery resource conservation, sustainable aquatic ecosystems and the socioeconomic development of the local community.
The inaugural competition also provided residents with an opportunity to take part in an organised recreational activity at Muara Tebas Jetty, bringing together the community, fishing enthusiasts and government representatives.
