SELANGAU: A suspicious pickup truck parked along the roadside led narcotics police to arrest five oil palm plantation workers and seize a stash of suspected methamphetamine yesterday (May 11).
The suspects, aged between 32 and 46, were detained at around 12.30pm following intelligence and surveillance on suspected drug activities at Bukit Kerangan, Sungai Kua.
Mukah police chief DSP Muhamad Rizal Alias said the local men were inside the vehicle when police closed in on them.
“As officers approached the vehicle, one of the suspects suddenly threw a suspicious object into nearby bushes in an apparent attempt to dispose of it.
“Checks later uncovered two straw tubes containing crystalline substances believed to be methamphetamine, hidden inside a cigarette box, weighing about 0.86g,” he said.
They were taken to the district police headquarters (IPD) for further investigation, where urine screening tests found them positive for amphetamine and methamphetamine.
Initial investigations also found that the suspects admitted ownership of the drugs.
The case is being investigated under Section 12(2) and Section 15(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952.
Rizal said all five suspects have been remanded until May 16 to assist investigations.
Members of the public are urged to report drug-related information to the Mukah police hotline at 084-871222 or the nearest police station.
