URUMQI, China: Five people were killed, and 24 others were injured in a suspension bridge accident at a scenic location in northwest China’s Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, according to local authorities on Wednesday, reported Xinhua.
The accident occurred at 6:18 pm when one of the bridge’s suspension cables snapped, causing the bridge deck to tilt.
A total of 29 people fell from the bridge, located in Zhaosu County, northern Xinjiang’s Ili Kazak Autonomous Prefecture.
Among the injured, two were seriously hurt while the remaining 22 sustained minor injuries. They were transported to nearby hospitals for treatment.
Authorities said none of the wounded are in life-threatening condition.
The site has been closed to visitors, and an investigation into the cause of the accident is currently underway. – BERNAMA-XINHUA
