Five fined for engaging in illegal cockfighting

KUCHING: Five men were given a fine of RM500 each, in default two weeks’ imprisonment, by the Magistrates’ Court on Monday (Dec 12) for illegal cockfighting.

Lim Chai Su, 32, Aloysius Jimie, 33, Mixwell Andrew Pidin, 26, Jonie Bakak, 30, and Petrus Agit, 22, pleaded guilty to a charge read before magistrate Syarifah Fatimah Azura Wan Ali.

According to the charge sheet, the accused were at an illegal cockfighting venue in Jalan Ming Chung, Batu Kawa on Dec 4.

They were charged under Section 3(1) of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animal Ordinance 1952, and sentenced under Section 5(1) of the same Act and read together Section 34 of the Penal Code.

If convicted, it carries a maximum fine of RM1,000 or six months’ imprisonment or both.

Six people were arrested, however, one of them is a 19-year-old teenager who is still awaiting sentencing.

The prosecution of the case was handled by Inspector Mohd Adzmei Ahmad while the accused were not represented.
