SERIAN: The Department of Occupational Safety and Health (DOSH) Sarawak has issued five prohibition notices to an employer following a workplace accident that claimed the life of a local man.
The accident occurred at Jalan Muara Mongkos last Thursday (Aug 7), when a 40-year-old worker was removing a fibre optic cable clip atop a three-metre pole.
“Preliminary investigations found that he was struck by an electric arc after working too close to live electrical cables.
“He was rushed to a nearby clinic before being referred to Sarawak General Hospital (SGH), where he died the next day (Aug 8) at 4.50 am,” the department said.
In light of this, DOSH issued five prohibition notices against the employer and the case is being investigated under Section 15(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act (OSHA) 1994 for failing to ensure the safety, health and welfare of workers.
Upon conviction, the offence carries a maximum fine of RM500,000, imprisonment of up to two years or both.
The department stressed that legal action will be taken against any responsible party in the event that a violation of OSHA 1994 (Act 514) is committed.
