KUCHING: Five local individuals were taken into custody for allegedly abusing drugs during an operation codenamed ‘Ops Pusat Hiburan’.
Conducted by the Kuching Narcotics Criminal Investigation Division (NCID) over the weekend, the team carried out inspections on an entertainment centre in Padungan.
In this operation, police screened 20 men and women, with five of them testing positive for drug use.
The suspects, whose identities were not known, are being detained under Section 15(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 for drug consumption.
If convicted, the offence carries a fine up to RM5,000 or imprisonment of up to two years, or both, and placed under two years of supervision under Section 38B of the same Act.
Police said continuous monitoring and enforcement will be carried out to curb drug activities at entertainment outlets.
Such an operation aimed to safeguard public safety and wellbeing through ongoing enforcement efforts.
