MUKAH: High levels of flammable methane gas were detected during a second round of monitoring at the Kaul Festival site in Oya here today (Jan 31), prompting a recommendation for the area to remain closed.

The Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) said gas readings reached between 90 and 100 per cent of the Lower Explosive Limit (LEL), indicating a high safety risk.

The monitoring, carried out from 9.12 am to 2.00 pm, involved three separate readings using four-gas detectors, with site conditions remaining dry and no fire reported.

Bomba said LEL readings were normal when boreholes were sealed but rose sharply once they were opened, confirming the presence of methane gas.

Following the findings, the hazardous materials (Hazmat) team advised that all boreholes be fully sealed or backfilled before the site is opened to the public.

Authorities were also urged to halt all activities at the location until safety risks are fully addressed.
