SARIKEI: The Civil Defence Force (APM) evacuated 60 students and 23 teachers and staff from SK Penghulu Aden after a flash flood submerged parts of the school early yesterday morning (Feb 26).

It was understood that heavy rain since Tuesday night (Feb 25) caused floodwaters to rise to waist level along the main road leading to the school, making access impossible.

Several parts of the school compound, including the dormitory, administration block, kitchen, dining hall, and classroom blocks, were also inundated with about a foot of water.

APM Sarikei District Officer Lt Shahrol Azizi Zaidi said they received a distress call at 8.10 am and immediately deployed a team to evacuate those affected to a safe location.

By press time, floodwaters were slowly receding. Despite the incident, school learning sessions remained unaffected and continued as usual.

Apart from SK Penghulu Aden, flash floods were also reported in other areas, including Jalan Repok.

Authorities have urged the public to stay vigilant and report any flood-related emergencies.
