SERIAN: The flood crisis that has gripped Sarawak for the past six days is finally easing, with authorities confirming the closure of two Temporary Relief Centres (PPS) on Saturday morning.

The decision to close the two centres in Bau comes as water levels recede, signaling a gradual return to normalcy for many affected residents.

Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas, who also chairs the Sarawak Disaster Management Committee (SDMC), said that the decline in floodwaters is a welcome development amid ongoing recovery efforts.

“The closure of these two relief centres marks a significant milestone in our battle against the floods. While we are optimistic about the improvements, we remain cautious and vigilant as we monitor the situation across the state,” he said.

He told the media this after visiting the PPS at Ranchan Multipurpose Hall here tomorrow(Feb 2).

Across Sarawak, a total of 63 PPS had been set up, assisting 3,696 families and approximately 12,692 individuals during the height of the crisis.

Despite the overall progress, certain areas, such as Sebauh, still face challenges with damaged roads and other infrastructure, prompting rapid repair efforts by the Public Works Department (PWD).

Meanwhile, in Bintulu, where floodwaters have receded, Uggah reported that residents have already started cleanup efforts, a sign of recovery spreading across the region.

However, he stressed that while the situation is improving, continuous monitoring and support remain essential for vulnerable communities across the region.
