BINTULU: All parties who came forward to help Chinese primary schools in the division, especially SJK (C) Sebiew, in the recovery effort after the recent flood disaster have won their gratitude.

Chairman of the Management Board of SJK (C) Sebiew Chinese, Pau Ngi Sing, who expressed his appreciation said the disaster not only caused massive destruction to residents’ homes, but also serious damage to educational infrastructure, with his school being among the most affected.

But he said the Bintulu community, regardless of race and religion, came together in their hour of need.

“When disaster strikes, we see how the people come together, helping each other regardless of background. This earnestness and spirit of togetherness is very touching,” he said.

According to Pau, the school suffered severe destruction with classrooms flooded, furniture damaged, books and learning materials destroyed, and basic facilities completely paralysed.

“Standing in the middle of this destruction, it’s hard to avoid feeling sad. However, a ray of hope appears when the community comes forward to offer help with full sincerity,” he said.

He also praised the efforts of volunteers consisting of parents, teachers, students, and the local community who joined hands to help restore the school.

“They showed up without hesitation, some cleaned classrooms, took care of damaged books, repaired facilities, and even prepared food for those who worked tirelessly under the scorching heat. Each of these efforts meant a lot,” he said.

He admitted that the recovery process is not an easy one, with many facilities no longer usable, including damaged textbooks and compromised electrical systems.

However, with the help of individuals, non-governmental organisations (NGOs), government agencies, charities, as well as political parties, school recovery efforts can be accelerated, he added.

“This spirit of concern is the most valuable social asset, reflecting how close-knit our community is,” he said.

“Every contribution, whether in the form of money or energy, plays an important role. This is not just an effort to rebuild the school, but also serves as an example to the younger generation about the importance of helping fellow human beings,” he said.
