KUCHING: Communities living in low-lying, flood-prone areas have been urged to remain prepared and not to delay evacuation if instructed by the authorities.
Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas advised affected residents to comply with directives from relevant agencies for their own safety.
“We understand that residents may be worried about leaving their homes behind, but the relevant agencies will ensure that abandoned houses are monitored.
“It is important that all victims follow instructions issued by the authorities for their own safety,” he said.
Uggah said this during a visit to the temporary evacuation centre (PPS) at the Stapok Community Hall here this afternoon.
Uggah, who is also the chairman of the Sarawak Disaster Management Committee (SDMC), said that two PPS had been activated since early this morning.
A total of 53 families involving 199 victims are currently housed at the Stapok Community Hall, while another 44 families involving 182 victims are sheltering at Dewan R-Piang Sinar Budi Baru.
He added that a warning has been issued, with several areas expected to experience rain until tomorrow (Thursday), including Serian, Sri Aman, Betong, Kuching and Samarahan.
“This indicates that the rainy season and monsoon have begun in Sarawak. Therefore, we urge all communities living in flood-prone, low-lying areas to be prepared.
“We will also issue directives to all departments, agencies and state divisional disaster management committees, from the divisional level down to the district level throughout Sarawak, to remain on standby,” he said.
Uggah also assured that supplies are sufficient to handle any uncertainties during a disaster, with several supply points having been established earlier.
“We have a main supply base in Kota Samarahan and several mini supply bases at various locations. Supplies have been pre-positioned in advance.
“In addition, suppliers have been stationed in their respective areas throughout Sarawak to ensure timely delivery when needed,” he added.
