KOTA SAMARAHAN: The recurring flood problems in Samarindah and Unigarden areas here are expected to be resolved within a year or two, said Kota Samarahan Member of Parliament, Datuk Rubiah Wang.

Speaking to reporters after the launching of PKD Mobile Kota Samarahan programme at Aiman Mall here, Rubiah said three flood mitigation projects have been planned, and are currently being implemented in the affected areas.

She explained that one of the projects, under the Sarawak state government and approved by the Premier, involves drainage upgrades and improvements in Samarindah, especially in areas frequently affected by flash floods.

“The project is now in its final study phase, where the Department of Drainage and Irrigation (DID) is finalising the technical details.

“We will be enhancing and reorganising several drainage systems to address the flood issue effectively, especially those involving Lorong 28 and Lorong 30 in Samarindah, which are frequently flooded,” she said.

Rubiahm who is also the Federal Rural and Regional Development (KKDW) Deputy Minister, added that another flood mitigation project is being carried out under the federal government through the Energy Transition and Water Transformation Ministry (PETRA).

“We are also hoping for another programme managed by PETRA, for flood mitigation in front of Unigarden, which is currently under construction.

“This is because not only Samarindah, but Unigarden also experiences flooding during heavy rain.

“With these three major initiatives, we are optimistic that the flood problems in Samarindah and Unigarden can be managed and resolved within the next one to two years,” she said.
