SPAOH: The long-standing issue of seasonal flooding in the town and its waterfront areas has been addressed with the construction of three tidal control gates at the Spaoh River here.
Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas when visiting the waterfront yesterday expressed satisfaction with the project’s effectiveness.
“So far so good. The project seems to be doing its job in stopping flood water from coming in.
“In the past, whenever we had heavy rain and the Spaoh river overflowing its banks, we experienced flooding here,” he said when met by reporters.
Uggah, who is Bukit Saban assemblyman, said the RM500,000 project under the Betong Division Development Agency (BDDA) was completed ahead of its scheduled May 2025 deadline.
“In the meantime, we are also checking on other enhancement projects which include a walkway and a gazebo,” he said.
Also present were Betong MP Datuk Dr Richard Rapu, Betong Resident Richard Abunawas and Political Secretary to the Premier Roselind Mapong.
