BANGKOK: More than 30,000 people have been affected by flooding in Thailand’s northern Nan province since Wednesday morning, with two deaths reported as authorities step up efforts to evacuate residents and provide urgent assistance.

Deputy Director-General of the Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation (DDPM) Chatchadaporn Boonpeeranuch said the flooding, triggered by heavy rain, flash floods and overflowing riverbanks, had affected 13,132 households, or 30,313 people, across four districts in the province — Pua, Tha Wang Pha, Phu Phiang and Santisuk.

She said two fatalities had been reported in Pua and Tha Wang Pha districts.

“Authorities had been instructed to prioritise the safety of residents, particularly vulnerable groups, and evacuate those in high-risk areas to safe locations before conditions worsened,” she said in a statement posted on the DDPM’s official Facebook account yesterday.

Chatchadaporn said officials were also coordinating with provincial public health offices to identify the locations of vulnerable people, including bedridden patients, so they could be reached and assisted quickly.

She urged residents to closely monitor water levels, rainfall and official warnings, saying authorities remained on alert for further rain that could worsen the situation. – BERNAMA
