KUCHING: A total of 12 temporary evacuation centres (PPS) has been activated across Sarawak following flooding in several areas, including landslide incident, with 1,270 people from 326 families affected so far as of 6:00 pm today.

Federal Minister for Women, Family and Community Development, Datuk Seri Nancy Shukri, said Stapok recorded the highest number of evacuees, involving several PPS.

PPS Dewan Masyarakat Stapok has 135 people and Surau Nurul Najhin Stapok with 56 people.

She said the situation is being closely monitored and expressed hope that there would be no further increase in the number of flood victims.

“Stapok has emerged as the worst-affected area following floods in Kuching, with hundreds of residents seeking shelter at PPS.

“The PPS at Dewan R-Piang Kampung Sinar Budi Baru houses 208 people, followed by SJKC Chung Hua Batu Kawah with 211 people, and SJKC Chung Hua Sungai Tengah accommodating 181 people,” she said.

Other PPS in Kuching include Dewan Serbaguna Taman Malihah (142), and Surau Ar-Rahman, Kampung Sungai Batu (59).

In Samarahan, PPS Dewan Suarah Kota Samarahan houses 23 people, while in Lawas, 89 people are at Dewan Masyarakat Trusan and 77 people at SJKC Chung Hwa.

In Miri, a landslide incident has caused a family of four to temporarily stay at PPS Dewan Bulan Sabit Merah.

Nancy said this during a press conference while visiting PPS Surau Ar-Rahman, Kampung Sungai Batu, this evening.

Minister for Women, Childhood and Community Development, Datuk Seri Fatimah Abdullah, accompanied Nancy during her visit.

Meanwhile, she said the Social Welfare Department (JKM) has assured that disaster relief supplies are sufficient to meet the needs of flood victims in Sarawak.

“There are eight main disaster relief depots that have been activated, including major depots in Kuching, Samarahan and Limbang, supported by several mini container depots.

“All essential supplies, especially food and drinking water, are continuously replenished to ensure there are no shortages at evacuation centres,” she said.

Nancy also urged residents affected by floods to evacuate to PPS and register promptly to ensure they receive adequate assistance, particularly vulnerable groups such as the elderly, children, pregnant women, and persons with disabilities.
