LONG LAMA: Rising floodwaters have forced 36 residents from 16 families to seek shelter at the temporary relief centre (PPS) in SJK(C) Kee Tee since yesterday (Sept 15).

The Telang Usan District Disaster Management Committee (DDMC) said the PPS was activated at 3.30 pm to accommodate victims from three areas hit by the floods, namely Long Lama town, Kampung Kayan Long Lama and Kampung Cina Long Lama.

Long Lama town and Kampung Kayan Long Lama each recorded 17 evacuees involving six and nine families respectively, while two people from a single family were moved out from Kampung Cina Long Lama.

The evacuees comprised eight men, 11 women, 11 children, an infant and five senior citizens.

It was understood that the incident was due to continuous heavy rain since Sept 8 and unusually high tides, which caused water levels to rise rapidly.

As at 7 am today (Sept 16), no additional victims have been reported, and conditions at the relief centre remain stable and under control.

Meanwhile, a Civil Defence Force (APM) monitoring team reported that several areas in Marudi were submerged this morning.

Water levels recorded at 0.40 metres in Kampung Dagang, 0.30 metres in Kampung Padang Kerbau, 0.26 metres in Kampung Cina and Jalan Logan Tasan, and 0.25 metres in Marudi town.

Kampung Narum and Kampung Ridan recorded 0.22 and 0.13 metres respectively, while the Marudi-Miri Road (Jalan Nanas) was fully receded.

The four-man team carried out inspections from 6am to 9am and confirmed that the situation was still under control, with all roads passable to vehicles.

Residents were advised to stay alert to rising water levels and be ready to evacuate if conditions worsen.

While no additional PPS have been opened in Marudi, the water trend remains on the rise despite clear weather.
