MIRI: Floodwaters in Long Bemang are steadily receding after almost a week of inundation caused by high tides colliding with relentless rainfall.
Civil Defence officers confirmed that by this morning, water levels had dropped to around one foot across key locations in the settlement.
Monitoring teams recorded one foot of water in the village, 0.9 ft at SK Long Bemang, and 1.2 ft at the local health clinic.
The floods, which began on September 13, had raised concerns about possible evacuations, but authorities said the outlook is now improving.
“No temporary evacuation centres have been opened as the situation remains safe and under control,” said District Civil Defence Officer for Marudi, Lt (PA) Mirwan Shah Masri.
Electricity supply was cut on September 15 as a safety measure, though the health clinic remains operational.
Schools are shut due to the scheduled holiday, not the floods.
Two Civil Defence volunteers, led by Pbt (PA) Noor Melati Uma, carried out today’s field inspection, using safety vests and measuring equipment to monitor water levels.
Clear skies this morning have reinforced confidence that conditions will continue to improve. Still, residents are urged to stay alert.
“Villagers are advised to remain vigilant about the water trend and be prepared to move if conditions become unsafe,” Mirwan said.
With the downward trend in floodwaters and the absence of fresh rainfall, local authorities are optimistic that normalcy will return soon.
