MARUDI: The town and several nearby villages were hit by rising waters on Sunday morning following days of heavy rain compounded by king tides, but conditions are showing signs of improvement.
According to the Marudi District Civil Defence Force (APM), water levels peaked in low-lying areas, including Kampung Padang Kerbau (0.37 metre), Kampung Cina (0.31 metre) and Marudi town centre (0.43 metre).
Roads, such as Logan Tasan, were also affected, with only high vehicles able to pass.
By mid-morning, floodwaters had started to subside, with the Marudi Stadium already clear.
The Civil Defence’s Echo Squad, led by Sergeant Siti Naquiah Abdullah, carried out inspections across affected areas between 6:20 am and 7:58 am, deploying a 4×4 ambulance and safety equipment.

A temporary relief centre has been activated at Marudi Civic Centre to accommodate residents if needed, though most households remain in their homes as conditions stabilise.
“Residents are advised to remain vigilant of water levels and evacuate if necessary. The situation is under control and safe, but we continue to monitor closely,” said Marudi District Civil Defence Officer, Lieutenant Mirwan Shah Masri.
The flooding was triggered by tidal surges colliding with intermittent heavy downpours since early September.
Clear skies were reported on Sunday afternoon, and the overall trend shows receding waters.
Authorities cautioned, however, that any shift in weather could quickly change the situation.
