MIRI: Floodwaters rose to between three and four feet in parts of Bekenu on Sunday morning as the Fire and Rescue Department intensified patrols across flood-prone areas amid the Northeast Monsoon.

A team from the Batu Niah Fire and Rescue Station conducted early-morning monitoring and ground assessments beginning at 6.30 am, focusing on high-risk locations including Pekan Bekenu, Kampung Dagang, Kampung Kelapa and Kampung Jenggalas.

Fire officers reported that water levels in parts of Pekan Bekenu had already reached one to two feet, while surrounding low-lying areas recorded higher levels of up to four feet following persistent rainfall and overcast conditions.

Despite the rising waters, no evacuations had been carried out as of the latest assessment, and no flood victims had been moved to temporary evacuation centres.

Despite the rising waters, no evacuations had been carried out as of the latest assessment.

The patrol was carried out using a Scania Fire Rescue Tender, led by PBK I Awang Azdwan, with a seven-member team comprising operational and support personnel.

Authorities said the situation remained under close observation as weather conditions continued to be unstable, with further rainfall likely.

The Fire and Rescue Department advised residents in low-lying and flood-prone areas to remain vigilant and to be prepared for possible evacuation should water levels continue to rise.

Monitoring and readiness operations will continue throughout the monsoon period to ensure swift response if conditions deteriorate.
