KUCHING: A total of 623 participants, comprising 27 groups from Kuching and eight groups from outside the city, will take part in this year’s Kuching Festival Folk Dance Display 2025.

Kuching South City Council (MBKS) Deputy Mayor Datuk Zaeidi Suhaili said the vibrant showcase will be held on August 10 at 7:00 pm at the Sarawak Hockey Stadium, featuring performances that celebrate movement, culture and connection.

He said the event’s growing participation reflects its reputation as a cultural gathering that transcends borders and unites communities.

“This folk-dance event is also part of the MBKS Ageing Programme, a key initiative aimed at encouraging active, healthy and connected lifestyles among our senior citizens.

“Through dance, we offer not only physical activity but also opportunities for mental wellness, friendship and joyful participation,” he said in a press conference at MBKS building here today.

He noted that the Kuching Festival is designed to be inclusive, ensuring no one is left behind regardless of age, background, or ability.

“Whether it’s a child attending a concert, a family enjoying the food fair, or seniors performing in a dance display, we ensure that no one is left behind. This is the MBKS way: inclusive, thoughtful and community-driven,” he said.

He added that the folk dance display, which has been organised for more than 30 years, has become a signature event of the Kuching Festival.

“Over the decades, it has evolved into a signature event that not only preserves cultural traditions but also strengthens the fabric of our city.

“It brings together communities, celebrates diversity, and promotes harmony, values that we continue to uphold and cherish.

“I also believe it is one of the most beautiful ways to stay active and engaged, especially for seniors, housewives, and those seeking joyful, meaningful activities,” he said.

Zaeidi added that the public is invited to join the event with their family and friends to witness how dance can connect, inspire and uplift.
