SARIKEI: The food and beverage (F&B) sector here continues to gain momentum with sustained government support, aimed at strengthening the resilience and sustainability of traders amid current economic challenges.

Deputy Minister of Plantation and Commodities, who is also Sarikei Member of Parliament and Repok assemblyman, Datuk Seri Huang Tiong Sii, said the coffee shop and restaurant industry remains a key driver of the local economy and a vital lifeline for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs).

He noted that beyond meeting daily consumer needs, the F&B sector also serves as a platform for cultural exchange while reflecting Sarikei’s unique local identity.

Huang said this at the 68th Anniversary Dinner of the Sarikei Coffee and Restaurant Traders Association, which brought together industry players and association members recently.

Addressing current challenges, he urged entrepreneurs to embrace progress by adopting digital technology, strengthening branding strategies, and improving service standards as well as food safety.

“The coffee and restaurant industry must move in step with the changing times. We cannot remain stuck in old ways. Instead, we must be bold in transforming and enhancing the quality of our services,” he said.

At the event, Huang also announced a RM50,000 contribution to the Sarikei Coffee and Restaurant Traders Association, and RM10,000 to the Federation of Sarawak Coffee and Restaurant Traders Associations, to support industry development.

He expressed hope that the financial assistance would help strengthen both associations and improve the capabilities of their members.
