Food premises face action over hygiene, licensing

SIBU: Nine food premises around Jalan Pedada here were subjected to various enforcement actions by the Sibu Municipal Council (SMC) after they were found to have violated hygiene and licensing regulations during an inspection yesterday (Aug 18).

The inspection was carried out by SMC’s Public Health Division, in collaboration with the enforcement unit and SMC councillors, led by the Deputy Chairman of the SMC Public Health, Environment and Municipal Services Action Committee, Councillor Yiing Sy Huat.

During the inspection, Yiing said cleanliness notices were issued to two premises after their cleanliness levels were found to be unsatisfactory and not in compliance with guidelines set by the local authority.

In addition, three premises were compounded for dumping food waste into drains, an offence that can cause pollution and disrupt the public drainage system.

“Another food premises was also subject to action after failing to present a valid operating licence from the council.

“The premises involved was compounded for operating without proper licensing approval,” he said.

In the same inspection, SMC also confiscated plastic straws from one premises, in line with its policy to reduce the use of single-use plastics.

According to Yiing, four premises were subject to action after being found using kitchen utensils that were worn out, chipped, and cracked, which could compromise food safety.

“In this operation, we also detected several premises still storing expired food in refrigerators.

“The premises involved were instructed to immediately dispose of the food to avoid risks to consumer health,” he said.

In terms of public space management, Yiing said two premises were compounded for placing chairs and tables on sidewalks without permits, while another was given a verbal warning for preparing food and placing tables in a public area without approval from the authorities.

Yiing stressed that SMC would continue to carry out regular inspections of all food premises here to ensure compliance with hygiene and licensing laws.

He also urged all food premises operators to be more responsible and ensure their business environments remain clean, safe, and properly licensed for the wellbeing of consumers and the overall image of the town.

Also present during the operation was Chairperson of the SMC Public Health, Environment and Municipal Services Action Committee, Councillor Jenny Ting.
